My cesarean stitches are itching—is it a sign of healing?

Itching at the cesarean wound site is very common during healing; it's usually related to new nerve endings repairing and collagen remodeling. But in some cases, infection or allergic reaction can also cause itching.

Ask yourself these questions:

• Is there redness? If there's no bright red area spreading from the wound, it's healing.
• Any discharge? Clear or yellowish discharge (seroma) is normal. Green, dark yellow, foul-smelling, or pus-like discharge suggests infection.
• Do you have a fever? Fever above 38°C, chills, or fatigue mean you should see a doctor.
• Is the wound hot? If the skin around it feels noticeably warmer than elsewhere on your body, that's a concern.

Safe tips:

• Don't remove or scratch the wound dressing unless your doctor says so.
• Non-toxic, fragrance-free moisturizer (coconut oil or pure shea butter) can be applied once the wound is completely closed — usually around week 6. Check with your doctor first.
• Wear cotton, loose clothing; synthetic fabrics irritate.

Seek medical care urgently if:

• Redness spreads more than 2 cm from the wound
• Discharge smells foul or turns green
• You have a fever
• You feel hardness, heat, and increasing pain under the skin

Itching alone, without other warning signs, is likely part of healing and should pass within a few weeks. But if you're unsure, seeing your doctor once for reassurance is worth it. Get well soon.
