Premature baby breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding a premature baby requires more patience and care than a term baby, but it is possible and breast milk is particularly valuable for premature babies.

First, because the baby's sucking-swallowing-breathing coordination isn't fully developed yet, they may not effectively empty the breast in the early period. This is why expressed breast milk is usually given via bottle or cup feeding in the first few days. Breast milk is expressed regularly and gradually shifted to direct nursing as the baby grows.

A common approach during the transition is to provide supplemental feeding through a thin tube alongside the breast (supplemental nursing system). This rewards the baby's sucking effort and extends time at the breast. Premature babies tire quickly, so frequent but short nursing attempts are made.

Key point: premature babies have precise fluid and energy needs. Sometimes breast milk fortifier needs to be added. This decision is made by the neonatal intensive care doctor. After discharge home, the baby's weight gain should be monitored regularly.

In short, nursing a premature baby is a marathon. Being patient, having frequent skin-to-skin contact, and definitely getting support from a lactation consultant or neonatologist increases success. Until the baby's weight and nursing skills are on track, expressed milk should be thought of as the primary feeding method.
