Feeding premature babies?

Feeding premature babies requires a special plan based on their gestational age, weight, and developmental maturity. The most basic principle is this:

Breast milk is the first choice. A premature mother's milk is different from term mothers' milk and contains higher protein, fat, and antibodies. Milk can begin to be given even while the baby is in an incubator.

Until sucking-swallowing-breathing coordination develops, the baby typically receives feeding through a tube or bottle. This coordination usually matures around 34-36 weeks. Until then, patience is important.

Fortified milk (supplemented): In very low birth weight babies (<1500 grams), breast milk alone may not provide enough calcium, phosphorus, and protein. In this case, the neonatologist may recommend adding a "fortifier" to breast milk.

Premature formula, specially formulated for low birth weight babies, is used. These are typically used only with doctor recommendation and usually until after discharge until the baby reaches a certain weight.

Feeding schedule: Introducing solids to premature babies is not based on calendar age but on corrected age (birth date + weeks of prematurity), and usually starts between 4-6 months of corrected age. However, this decision must always be made by your pediatrician.

Each premature baby's needs are different; progressing under the care of a neonatologist and pediatric gastroenterologist is the safest path.
