How do autistic babies play?

The play of autistic babies may show some differences from neurotypical peers, but this doesn't mean they 'don't play'; the nature and focus of play is simply different. The most common characteristics are:

• Repetitive actions like spinning, swinging, throwing, and lining things up may be at the center of play. A baby might spend hours spinning a toy's wheel while not "playing with" it as a car.
• Using objects in non-functional ways is common: putting a block in their mouth instead of stacking it, dropping it, or holding it up to the light.
• Symbolic play (pretend play) is often delayed or may not develop; for example, there's no pretend sleep, pretend feeding, or pretend drinking from a cup.
• Disinterest in social play (peekaboo, tickling) is common; the baby may not make eye contact, doesn't respond to your reactions, prefers to play alone.
• Sensory seeking drives play: vibration, pressure, particular textures, or sounds attract intense interest.

Important: These characteristics are early warning signs, but by themselves they're not a diagnosis. If your baby shows reduced eye contact, doesn't respond to their name, lacks shared attention (looking where you're looking), uses toys in unusual ways, and has noticeable delays in imitation skills, a consultation with a child development specialist or child psychiatrist is recommended.
