Blocked milk duct versus mastitis: how to tell and what to do

Blocked duct: A painful lump in one area, usually shaped like something you can feel with your hand. No fever, no chills, just ache. Your breast might feel warm or red right over the lump. Remedy: keep nursing (or pumping) from that side, especially starting with the blocked side. Apply a warm compress before feeding, then cold compress after. Usually resolves in 24-48 hours as you keep draining it.

Mastitis (breast infection): The painful area plus redness over that spot, AND you have a fever (usually 38°C or higher), chills, body aches, and you feel generally ill — like flu. This is inflammation or infection.

What to do:

• No fever? It's probably blocked. Keep nursing/pumping frequently from that breast. Massage the area gently. Warm before, cold after. Usually clears up on its own in a day or two.
• Have a fever? This needs a doctor — mastitis often needs antibiotics. But keep nursing; it speeds healing and doesn't hurt your baby.
• Fever or pain lasting more than 24 hours? See your doctor or OB/GYN.

Important: Never stop nursing because of pain or infection — emptying that breast is what fixes it.
