What to do to help colicky babies sleep?

Sleep difficulty during the colic period can be draining for both baby and parent. First, it's comforting to know that colic usually passes naturally around 3-4 months, and the goal during this time is not 'perfect sleep' but helping baby find relief.

Some methods you can try:

• White noise: Hair dryer sounds, fan noise, or white noise apps can remind baby of the sounds in the womb and help calm them.
• Firm swaddling: Arms close to body, legs free, swaddling reduces sudden movements and startle reflexes. Discontinue when baby starts rolling.
• Carrying upright: Holding baby upright for 15-20 minutes after feeding reduces gas cramps. Gently rubbing their back while holding them on your shoulder helps gas pass and provides security.
• Warm bath and belly massage: After bath, gentle clockwise belly massage (moving away from the belly button) can provide gas relief.
• Consistent 'calming routine': Applying the same steps every night in order — dim lights, calm speech, gentle rocking — helps baby learn over time that 'it's bedtime now.'

Taking a 10-15 minute break during colic crying, putting baby in a safe place, and regaining your composure is also important. A tired parent has harder time staying calm — this is very human.

When to see a doctor? If crying increases after the 4th month, doesn't resolve, baby's weight gain slows, or additional symptoms appear (vomiting, bloody stools, rash), definitely see a pediatrician.
