What if I start solids before baby is ready?

Grandparents' pushes to start early can feel really hard, but starting solids before baby's ready has several real risks:

Digestion issues: If baby's system isn't ready to process solid foods, you might see gas, bloating, constipation, or diarrhea. Starting solids before 4 months also puts extra strain on kidneys.

Choking and swallowing risk: If the tongue-thrust reflex is still active, baby pushes solids out with his tongue or struggles to swallow, which raises aspiration risk (food entering the airway).

Allergy and intolerance: Immature gut barriers can increase allergic reactions or food intolerances when exposed too early.

Reduced breast milk/formula intake: Early solids often mean baby nurses less, missing out on key nutrients (iron, zinc, vitamin D) and risking slow weight gain.

Long-term feeding problems: A forced feeding experience early on can create food refusal and negative feeding associations that stick.

General pediatric guidance recommends starting solids no earlier than end of month 4, ideally at month 6 — and most importantly, when your individual baby shows readiness signs (can sit with support, head control, interest in food, fading tongue-thrust). Waiting protects him; rushing invites problems.
