Should my baby abroad learn Turkish first or the local language?

First, let me share this reassuring fact: growing up bilingual doesn't slow your baby's mental development at all; in the long run, it provides advantages in flexible thinking, problem-solving, and attention control. Whichever language they hear most before preschool is the language in which they'll develop fluency — so don't worry about getting it "wrong."

Before preschool, it's healthiest for them to speak the language you naturally use at home (usually Turkish). Because the foundation of language is built through bonding and sharing emotions; preschool will expose them 6-8 hours daily to that country's language and they'll catch up quickly. You don't need a deliberate "Turkish first" strategy; just naturally speaking your language is enough. By the time preschool starts, they'll have internalized Turkish naturally through play, books, and daily routines.

The pediatric view is: babies don't get confused before preschool; they associate each language with the person speaking it. Having a different language at preschool than at home doesn't surprise them; it's a natural bilingual model. After preschool starts, maintaining Turkish at home is enough to support it — adding Turkish books and regular Turkey visits are good additions.

So don't worry about rushing Turkish learning before preschool; trust that your natural home language will be the foundation, and the local language will develop at preschool.
