How to relieve breast pain during breastfeeding?

Breast pain during breastfeeding is usually caused by a clogged milk duct, improper positioning, or engorgement. Here are general suggestions based on the most common situation:

• Breastfeed frequently and in the correct position: Make sure your baby grasps the nipple and a large portion of the areola. Try to empty the sore breast first.
• Heat and cold compresses: Before breastfeeding, a warm towel or warm shower helps milk flow; after breastfeeding, a cold compress (between thin cloth) reduces swelling and pain. (Don't apply cold longer than 15-20 minutes.)
• Emptying: If the baby isn't nursing or isn't emptying fully, gently empty by hand or breast pump — but over-stimulation can increase mastitis risk.
• Fluids and rest: Increase water intake to help your body heal, and make sure to rest in bed.
• Lanolin cream: If nipples are cracked, pure lanolin cream (safe for ingestion) can be applied after breastfeeding.

When to see a doctor: If pain is accompanied by fever (≥38°C), breast redness, warmth, or widespread swelling — these could be signs of mastitis (breast infection) and may require antibiotics. Also consult a lactation consultant or obstetrician if pain lasts longer than 2 weeks or prevents breastfeeding.
