Feeling tearful after birth—is this normal?

My dear, it's so normal to feel this way. The first weeks after birth are hormonally intense, sleepless, and emotionally overwhelming as you adjust to this new life.

The mild emotional ups and downs that start in the first 1-2 weeks after birth and usually fade within 2 weeks are often called "baby blues"—they're hormonal and very common. But if tearfulness, hopelessness, feeling disconnected from your baby, or intense worry lasts beyond 2 weeks, this could be postpartum depression—and that's a real, treatable condition, not a weakness.

Some things that might help now:

• Remind yourself these feelings are temporary, but don't dismiss them either.
• Try to carve out 10-15 minutes daily just for you (a shower, a cup of tea, a moment alone).
• Relax the "baby sleeps, you sleep" rule if needed—your rest sometimes comes first.
• Ask your partner, family, or friends for concrete help: cooking, changing diapers, holding the baby for an hour so you can rest.

Reach out to your OB/GYN or family doctor, especially if this lasts beyond 2 weeks, you can't bond with your baby, or thoughts of harming yourself or your baby come up.
