Can a teething baby get allergies?

The teething process does not directly cause allergies in babies. Teething is a physiological process and has nothing to do with allergic reactions.

But these two are often confused because:

1. Teething symptoms (increased drooling, fussiness, mild fever, red cheeks, constantly putting things in the mouth) can sometimes resemble allergy symptoms (rash, runny nose, watery eyes) and may occur at the same time.

2. The teething period (generally 4-7 months old) is also when complementary foods are introduced — which means exposure to new allergens.

To tell them apart:

• Redness from teething is usually saliva-related irritation around the mouth; it doesn't spread to other parts of the body.
• A true allergic rash may appear on multiple areas like the trunk, arms, legs, and face, and may be itchy.
• Teething may cause fever up to 38°C; fever above 38°C is related to infection, not teething.

When starting complementary foods, giving each new food 3-5 days apart and observing your baby's reaction is the most reliable way to distinguish a possible allergy.

Current pediatric view: Teething does not cause allergies; if your baby shows allergy-like symptoms, consider complementary foods, environmental allergens, or infection first.
