Playing baby games?

Playing games with your baby is one of the most important parts of their development. The games I recommend should be tailored to each developmental stage. We can roughly divide this into three main periods:

0-6 months: Sensory discovery stage

• Face-to-face games: Smile at your baby, stick your tongue out, make facial expressions. You'll see them start to imitate.
• "Peek-a-boo": A simple game where you cover your face with your hands and open them — this gets laughs from 4 months onward.
• Touch games: Let them feel different textures (velvet, cotton, fleece fabric) in their hands.
• Foot and leg games: While baby lies on their back, touch their feet, gently move their legs in a bicycle motion.

6-12 months: Cause-and-effect and movement stage

• Open-and-close game: Let your baby open and close a container. Put a toy inside, open the lid and say "look!" with surprise.
• Roll-and-catch: Slowly roll a soft ball toward them; they'll try to push it back to you.
• Dropping things: Let them drop a toy from a high chair and you return it — it's a learning experience for them.
• Moving toward and away: Place a toy beside them, then a bit further away to encourage crawling or reaching.

12-24 months: Imitation and pretend play

• Telephone game: Pretend to use an old phone saying "hello," and let them imitate.
• Animal sounds: Use picture cards or toy animals to match sounds — "the cow says moo," "the cat says meow."
• Nesting containers: Let them put and take out containers of different sizes.
• Building towers: Build a small tower with soft blocks and let them knock it down. Then ask "shall we build again?"

Golden rule: Let your baby lead the play. Whatever they're interested in, build the game around that. Your job is to set up the space and sometimes step back to let them explore. Without pushing or directing, play becomes their most natural learning pathway.
