Baby play chair?

Baby play chairs, especially for babies 4-6 months starting supported sitting, are something parents often consider. I need to be clear about this: current pediatric guidance does not recommend baby play chairs for extended use.

The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) and international safety experts classify play chairs as "bouncers/sitters." These are appropriate when your baby is awake, you're watching, and use is brief (15-20 minutes) for play and interaction. They're safe on a flat surface, not placed on a high table.

However, critical warnings include:

• Never for sleeping: Using a play chair for sleep risks the baby's head tilting forward and blocking their airway (positional asphyxia). Babies should only sleep on their backs on a firm, flat surface.
• Unsupported sitting: If your baby can't sit on their own yet, leaning back in a chair doesn't support their back and hip development. Tummy time on the floor and supported sitting on your lap are far more developmentally valuable.
• Balance and falls: As your baby moves around, they could tip the chair over. Keep your eyes on them constantly.

Bottom line: Short play sessions with you nearby and only when awake are fine. But it shouldn't be a place where your baby spends much of the day, sleeps, or is left alone. The best "play area" is still on the floor, on a clean blanket or play mat.

Consult your pediatrician and make sure the model you choose meets safety standards (wide base to prevent tipping, 5-point safety harness).
