Why doesn't my baby sleep when crying?

It's completely natural to wonder why your baby cries and won't sleep. This is a challenge many families face. First, know that when babies resist sleep by crying, it usually stems not from a medical problem, but from developmental or environmental factors. However, understanding what is "normal" depends very much on your baby's age.

In babies under 3 months, continuous crying and inability to sleep can be related to colic, gas pains, or hunger. In older babies (4-12 months), sleep regressions, teething, separation anxiety, or overstimulation are common causes.

Here are the *red flag* signs when you should see a specialist right away:

• Fever (over 38°C for babies under 3 months, over 39°C for babies over 3 months)
• Difficulty breathing, bluish lips
• Seizures, unresponsiveness
• No wet diapers for more than 8 hours (sign of serious dehydration)
• Non-blanching rash on skin when pressed (red-purple spots)

If you don't see these signs and your baby is generally doing well (alert when awake, feeding/appetite normal), you can start by checking the environment: room temperature (22-24°C is ideal), diaper cleanliness, gentle gas massage. Establishing a consistent bedtime routine can also help tremendously.
