Baby speech development?

Speech development progresses at different rates in each baby, but general milestones are as follows:

0-6 months: Baby makes crying, cooing, and gurgling sounds. Their voice changes tone based on need (hungry, uncomfortable, or tired cry). You'll notice they turn toward sound and listen to your voice.

6-12 months: Babbling period — repeating syllables: "ba-ba", "da-da". By 9-10 months, these can turn into meaningful words like "mama", "dada". They start using gestures (waving bye-bye, pointing).

12-18 months: First meaningful words period (usually 3-10 words). Words are usually nouns ("ball", "water", "mommy"). Responds when called by name, understands simple instructions ("get the ball").

18-24 months: Word explosion — up to 50+ words. Two-word sentences begin ("mommy go", "more milk"). Most people understand what they're saying.

2-3 years: Three-to-four word sentences, asking questions ("what's this?"). Grammar is simple but developing rapidly. "I play ball." Strangers can understand most of it.

When should you consult a pediatrician:

• No single word at 12 months
• No response to name or meaningful words by 18 months
• Fewer than 25 words or no two-word sentences by 2 years
• Loss of language skills previously gained at any age

Delayed speech is often temporary, but early evaluation is important — hearing screening and language evaluation may be needed. Speaking frequently with your baby, reading books, and imitating the sounds they make are the most supportive things you can do for development.
