Do you lose weight while breastfeeding?

Weight loss while breastfeeding isn't an automatic guaranteed process — most mothers experience some natural decline, but not everyone loses weight at the same rate or amount.

Breastfeeding itself burns about 300-500 extra calories per day; this is energy above and beyond your resting metabolism. This is why many mothers, especially in the first 3-6 months, naturally shed some of the weight they gained during pregnancy. But your body prioritizes milk production: if you don't eat enough calories, weight loss slows because your body protects milk supply and doesn't dip into your reserves much. So "the less I eat, the faster I lose" can backfire.

Recommended: healthy, balanced eating (no extreme restrictions), plenty of water, and prioritizing sleep. Sleep deprivation raises cortisol (the stress hormone), making weight loss harder. Also, starting gentle walks with doctor approval after week 6 is helpful.

If there's no weight loss over 6-12 months despite trying, or if you're losing weight very quickly (more than 2-3 kg per month), I'd recommend seeing an OB/GYN and dietitian — thyroid or hormonal factors could be at play.

Short answer: yes, breastfeeding makes weight loss easier as one factor, but it's not a guaranteed formula. Give yourself time.
