Baby sensory play?

It's completely understandable to worry about sensory play. Here's what's important to know: sensory play in babies is completely normal and a healthy part of development. Babies explore the world by putting objects in their mouths, hitting things, making sounds, and repeating movements.

Your baby's age is what matters here. In a baby under 12 months, putting things in the mouth, shaking, hitting, and responding to textures are all expected behaviors. These show that the sensory system is working well.

However, there are some signs that might warrant a consultation with a specialist:

• Extreme reactions to certain textures (like sand or play dough — completely refusing to touch them or showing extreme fear/anger)
• Unusual intense distress at certain sounds or lights
• Insisting on moving objects in only one specific way (like always spinning the same direction) and being unable to switch to different play

If you don't see these signs and your baby's overall development (eye contact, smiling, making sounds) is on track for their age, you can relax. Sensory play is exploration in its purest form and nothing to worry about. That said, if there's something else bothering you or these behaviors persist noticeably until age 2, talking to your pediatrician is helpful.
