My baby sleeps much more than other babies their age, and it's hard to wake them. Should I be worried about so much sleeping?

I understand your concern; this can definitely raise questions for parents. Your baby's age and overall condition are the key factors here.

During the newborn period (0–3 months), it's normal for babies to sleep 16–18 hours per day, and you don't need to wake them; as long as your baby wakes on their own and is eager to feed, there's no problem. However, if your baby is older than 3 months, you're having serious difficulty waking them, and when awake they seem drowsy, unresponsive, or uninterested in feeding, this needs closer evaluation.

If your baby:

  • Doesn't want to feed or eat when awake,
  • Struggles to make eye contact when awake or seems unresponsive to their surroundings,
  • Has irregular breathing, wheezing, or any bluish discoloration,
  • Has a fever,

Or if your baby is under 3 months and is wetting fewer than 8 diapers a day,

I'd recommend contacting your pediatrician the same day. Without these signs, if your baby is alert and feeding well when awake, long sleep periods are often part of a growth spurt or natural temperament.
