Fever and diarrhea in baby?

Disagreeing with your mother-in-law while feeling stuck is really hard—your worry is completely valid. Let's sort this out.

Baby's age matters most when fever and diarrhea happen together.

If your baby is under 3 months with fever (armpit temp) of 38°C or higher: this is urgent. Don't wait—go straight to the ER (call 112), regardless of diarrhea.

If your baby is over 3 months old:

• Fever usually means the body is fighting an infection. Diarrhea often comes from the same virus (like rotavirus) hitting the digestive system.
• The real danger: Fever makes you sweat and lose fluid; diarrhea loses fluid directly. Together they dehydrate your baby fast.
• Watch for dehydration: Count wet diapers—if none in 8+ hours, eyes look sunken, or the soft spot on their head sinks in, that's an emergency and you need 112.

What to do:

• Use your doctor's recommended fever reducer (stick to the dose), don't make up your own dose
• Give lots of fluids—frequent breastfeeding or small formula amounts. If over 6 months, tiny sips of water. Skip sugary drinks or juice—they make diarrhea worse
• Watch wet diapers carefully

Your mother-in-law might be saying something and you might have read something else—but don't get stuck between them. Your baby's age matters most, and so does watching for dehydration signs.
