Baby's hands and feet are ice cold but fever is high, why?

This condition is medically known as 'febrile peripheral vasoconstriction' — the body narrows blood vessels in the hands and feet to retain heat, directing blood to the internal organs. This is why the torso and head feel burning while the hands and feet are cold. It's a very common finding during the fever-rising phase and is not dangerous in itself. What matters is your baby's overall state: Is she awake, able to drink, breathing comfortably? If your baby experiences chills and shivering as the fever rises, wrapping her in a thin blanket helps, but never overdress or try to make her sweat — this will only raise the fever further. As the fever comes down, the hands and feet will return to normal. However, if this occurs alongside a baby under three months old, a fever of 38°C or higher, lethargy and sleepiness, or refusal to drink, call 112 immediately or go to the emergency room. If your baby is older than three months and the cold hands and feet don't improve within a few hours despite fever-reducing medicine, consult your pediatrician.
