My baby talks much less than their peers—how do I tell if it's delayed?

To understand the line between "individual differences" and "delays" in language development, you need to look at age-specific milestones. According to general pediatric guidelines:

• 12-15 months: Meaningful single words (mama, dada, food, etc.) are expected.
• 18 months: At least 5-10 words in vocabulary and understanding of simple directions (for example, "get the ball").
• 24 months (2 years): At least 50 words and simple two-word sentences (for example, "mama come", "give ball") are expected. Also, the number of words your child understands should be much greater than the words they speak.

If your child doesn't have meaningful words by 18 months or hasn't reached 50 words by 2 years, this is something to pay attention to in language development. However, an important note: language development is not just about speaking. Pointing, eye contact, and joint attention (showing you a toy) are also important communication efforts that should be in the normal range.

When should you see a doctor?

• No meaningful words by 18 months
• Fewer than 50 words by 2 years or no two-word sentences yet
• Speech loss at any age (forgetting words previously said)
• Suspected hearing loss (not responding when called by name)

In these cases, consulting a child developmental specialist or pediatrician is the right step for early intervention. Remember, early identification means intervention is much more effective.
