My baby doesn't like tummy time, is gross motor development delayed?

Crying and not wanting to lift head during tummy time is very common, especially in early months. This is how baby expresses their discomfort — it doesn't mean weak muscles or a developmental problem.

Short answer: Not liking tummy time won't delay sitting or crawling. But not spending enough "belly-down" time in this position can slow the strengthening of neck, back, and shoulder muscles. These same muscles are also the foundation for head control, rolling, sitting, and crawling.

What matters is adjusting the duration and method:

• Start with short periods several times a day (30 seconds-1 minute), and pick baby up before crying starts.
• Get at eye level with your baby during tummy time, make eye contact, hold a favorite toy at eye level.
• If they're tired of the flat floor, lay them on your chest or forearm — your movement and warmth will soothe them.
• Even 20 seconds after every diaper change adds up to more total time.

If crying doesn't decrease and head-lifting doesn't improve within 2-3 weeks, you might suggest to your pediatrician that they assess muscle tone and reflexes. But most likely your baby just doesn't like this position yet — developmentally they're fine.
