My baby falls forward while sitting — what should I do?

Losing forward balance and falling face-first while sitting is common at this stage. This happens because your baby's abdominal and back muscles haven't developed enough strength yet.

The most effective thing you can do is provide a safe space where your baby can practice without fear of injury. Lay a play mat on the floor, surround it with pillows, and sit your baby down for short periods, allowing them to work on balance naturally. When they fall, wait a few seconds before picking them up; this gives their body a chance to develop balance reactions.

To strengthen sitting balance, practice these activities regularly:

• Side-lying to sitting: Place your baby on their side and gently support them while they move to sitting. This builds core strength.
• Balanced sitting in your lap: Hold your baby sitting on your lap, facing you. Slowly and gently rock them forward, backward, left, and right. This stimulates their inner ear's balance system.
• Tummy time: Continue regular short periods of tummy time. This strengthens the back, shoulder, and neck muscles that form the foundation for sitting.

The falls you're experiencing now aren't concerning — they're part of development. However, if by 9 months your baby still can't sit unsupported or doesn't develop the protective reflex of putting their hands forward when falling (extending their arms to catch themselves), it would be worth checking with your pediatrician.
