My baby kicks into the diaper while I'm fastening it — how do I do it more easily?

Baby kicking and putting their feet in the diaper during changes is very common — this becomes even more obvious during periods of increased mobility (usually 6-12 months). Babies do this for exploration or play, not resistance.

Here are some methods that work:

• Distraction: Keep a few "only here" toys by the changing table (like a small book or teething ring). Give them to the baby during changing.
• Position strategy: Lay the baby on their back but hold both ankles gently together with one hand, and quickly pull and fasten the diaper with the other. This "ankle capture" technique physically limits kicking.
• Top to bottom: Place the new diaper under the old one before opening it; this reduces the time it takes to slide it under with one hand.
• Timing: Do diaper changes after, not before, nursing/meals — a satisfied and calm baby kicks less.
• Foot-in-diaper issue: Close the front tab at the belly button level, not at chest height; when the baby raises their foot, they have a harder time reaching the diaper.
