Can allergies cause snoring in babies?

If your baby has nasal congestion and snores, the most common cause isn't allergies but the naturally narrow nasal passages in infancy and mucus buildup. Especially in babies 0-6 months, nasal passages are anatomically narrow; dry air, a light cold, or even slight reflux can cause congestion. Snoring is usually from post-nasal drip or positional (sleeping on back).

Could it be allergies? Yes, especially after 6 months—dust mites, pollen, mold, or pet dander can trigger allergies. But to suspect allergies, you'd usually see other signs too: sneezing, itchy/watery eyes, or skin rashes. Without these, allergies are less likely.

Try: Keep the humidity in the sleeping room around 50-55% (use a humidifier if available), cover the crib with a dust-mite-proof cover, avoid smoke and steam indoors, and do nasal cleaning before bed (with saline spray and an aspirator). Slightly elevating the head of the crib can also reduce post-nasal drip and lessen snoring.

Talk to your pediatrician if: snoring is accompanied by breathing pauses (several seconds of silence followed by a deep breath), baby constantly struggles to breathe, weight gain is affected, or congestion lasts 3+ weeks and disrupts daily life. If you suspect allergies and see other signs, your doctor can refer you to a pediatric allergist.
