My 4-month-old baby wants to sit — is this normal?

Your 4-month-old wanting to sit is very exciting, but it can also be confusing — I understand.

Actually, when your baby "wants" to sit at this age, it shows that their back and neck muscles are starting to strengthen. But independent balanced sitting typically develops at 6-8 months. What you can do best right now:

• You can hold your baby on your lap or on the floor in a half-sitting position, with your back supporting from behind (or with a support pillow); this doesn't put too much strain on their spine while it strengthens their muscles.
• Keep doing "tummy time" (baby's time on their stomach) — this is the most natural way for neck, back, and shoulder muscles needed for sitting to develop.
• Never prop them between pillows or leave them sitting without support with "sitting helper" products — early forcing can negatively affect spine development.

If your baby can hold their head up when supported on your lap and can balance on their own for a few seconds, this is normal progress. If they can't sit up completely straight, with their legs in front and no support at all, see this as a natural part of development, not a gap.

When to ask your pediatrician: If at 6 months they still can't hold their head up steady or show any trunk muscle engagement when semi-reclined, it's worth checking. But for a 4-month-old, this is often early enthusiasm — the muscles will develop when ready and sitting will come naturally.
