2-year-old speech development?

Speech development in a 2-year-old typically falls into two areas: understanding (what he grasps) and expressing (what he can say).

Understanding:

• Can follow two-step simple directions ("get the ball and bring it to me").
• Can point to body parts.
• Knows names of familiar objects.

Speaking (Expression):

• Average active vocabulary of 50–200 words is expected.
• Begins forming two-word short sentences ("daddy come," "throw ball," "give water").
• Often drops the last or first sounds of words—normal at this age.
• Familiar people understand most of what he says; strangers may understand about 50%.

When to worry:

• Still no meaningful words by age 2,
• Trouble following simple directions,
• No attempt to communicate (no pointing, eye contact, or mimicking),
• Lost words or sounds he used to make.

In these cases, see your pediatrician and a child development specialist. Early help for speech delays is very effective.

What families can do:

• Repeat what he says back correctly (as a model, not a correction).
• Narrate your day in simple sentences.
• Read books together and ask simple picture questions.
• Limit screen time (no more than 1 hour daily, preferably interactive content).
