For a 1-year-old, the most valuable play comes from simple, everyday interactions: peek-a-boo (hiding and revealing objects), putting small rings or wooden blocks in and out of a box, rolling a soft ball back and forth, turning pages together in a thick cardboard book with your help — these all build motor skills and cause-and-effect thinking. What matters most isn't how long they play, but your facial expressions, tone of voice, and being at their level. If you're going to buy a toy, choose things that do just one simple action, or let them build/take apart, rather than flashy electronic items. The best toy is often something that lets them move and think, with you right beside them.
