1-year-old baby speech exercises?

Around 1 year, there are several simple but effective approaches you can integrate into daily life to support your baby's speech development:

Talk a lot and narrate. Express everything you're doing out loud—"We're drinking from a blue cup now," "We're going to the kitchen, we'll get an apple." This fills the passive word bank.

Make reading a routine. Board books with one object per page are ideal. Show the picture, say the name clearly, then give your baby a chance to point to it too.

Play imitation games. Copy the sounds your baby makes; then add a new syllable (for example, "ba-ba," then "ba-ba-m"). This strengthens the sense of mutual conversation.

Ask questions and practice waiting. Ask "Where's the ball?" and wait 5-10 seconds for an answer. If it doesn't come, show it and repeat the name.

Limit screen time. Under 1 year, no screens at all; 1-2 years old, maximum 20-30 minutes per day, only with a parent present and interactive content, per AAP guidelines.

Remember: 12-18 months, most babies say 1-3 words; at 18 months, 10-20 words. If there are no meaningful words by 18 months, or if you have concerns about eye contact or hearing, it's worth checking with a pediatrician.
