How should a 1-month-old baby's development be?

Development in a 1-month-old follows these general guidelines:

Physical: Can briefly lift their head, can slightly turn their head when lying face-down. When lying on their back, arms and legs move symmetrically — hands are usually fisted. Independent movement of limbs is not yet expected; movements are still reflexive.

Visual and Hearing: Can focus on objects approximately 20-30 cm away from the face, especially high-contrast (black-white) patterns. Startles at sudden sounds, turns toward or calms to familiar sounds — particularly their mother's and father's voices.

Social-Emotional: Doesn't yet smile consciously but during sleep, facial muscle contractions create reflexive smiles (not social smiles). Expresses needs through crying; different crying tones begin to be distinguished over time.

Sleep: Spends most of the day sleeping (about 16-17 hours), wakes every 1.5-3 hours for feeding. No distinction between night and day yet.

Feeding: Only breastmilk or formula — no additional foods. Typically 6-8 wet diapers daily, regular weight gain monitored.

Signs requiring doctor consultation: Inadequate weight gain at the 1-month check, issues with hearing/vision screening, no response to loud sounds, excessive vomiting after feeding (projectile). Beyond these, individual variations are normal; every baby develops at their own pace.
