1 month old baby crying at night?

Nighttime crying in a 1-month-old baby is quite common and usually a normal part of development. At this age, babies can't distinguish day from night yet, and their tiny stomach means they need to feed every 2-3 hours.

Most common reasons:

• Hunger: The most frequent cause. Your baby might want to feed more often during growth spurts.
• Gas/colic: Especially in late afternoon and evening, with legs pulled up toward belly.
• Wet or dirty diaper: Sensitive skin can be irritated.
• Need for comfort: Wanting skin contact, to be held, or swaddled.

What you can do:

• Check if baby is hungry — feed if it's feeding time.
• Try gas relief positions (bicycle leg movements while on their back).
• Make sure the room isn't too hot or cold.
• Hold your baby in a calm, dimly lit environment and gently sway or make "shh" sounds.

When to call the doctor: If crying lasts longer than 3 hours, high fever accompanies it, vomiting or blood in stools, baby is passing minimal urine, or a rash appears alongside fussiness — contact your pediatrician.
