Don't you just love spotting the first plums of the season in your shopping basket? This little, slightly tart fruit isn't just for grown-ups — prepared the right way at the right age, it can absolutely earn a place on your baby's plate. Why Are Plums Perfect for This Season?

Green and yellow plums that ripen in May and early June offer your baby potassium, vitamin C, and fibre. Thanks to their fibre content, they act as a natural remedy for the constipation that's so common when babies start solids. And choosing locally grown, in-season fruit is kind to both your wallet and the planet. When picking plums at the market, look for ones with a matte skin, a little give when gently pressed, and no bruising — very firm plums aren't ripe yet.

What Age, and How Should You Prepare Them?

For babies aged 6–8 months who are just starting solids, steam the plum for 4–5 minutes, peel the skin, remove the stone, and blend into a smooth purée. If needed, you can loosen the consistency with a little breast milk or formula. For babies between 9 and 12 months, offer small cubes of softly mashed plum — this is when finger foods start to come into the picture. Children over 12 months can have raw peeled plum slices, though always keep the stone well out of reach! Plum purée paired with yoghurt doubles both the flavour and the nutritional value; this combination makes a wonderful snack for babies aged 8 months and older.
