Home Safety for Toddlers: A Checklist
Toddlers (12–36 months) are filled with the desire to explore the world. Every step, every opened door, every sound makes them curious. At this stage, your home is the most important safety environment. System and consistency—not panic—are the keys to success.
Living Room & Bedroom
✓ Cover electrical outlets with protective caps. ✓ Secure heavy furniture (TV stands, shelves) to the wall. ✓ Bundle cords (curtains, lamp cables) out of reach. ✓ Install corner guards on sharp corners. ✓ Move small objects (buttons, beads, batteries) above 10 cm height. ✓ Place bed rails on the edges of the bed. ✓ Secure rugs with non-slip padding.
Kitchen & Dining Area
✓ Keep cabinet doors locked (toxic chemicals, sharp tools). ✓ Turn pot handles inward on the stove. ✓ Keep hot beverages at a height your toddler cannot reach. ✓ Remove pull-able items like tablecloths and napkins. ✓ Move chairs away from the table (prevent climbing). ✓ Keep trash can closed or out of reach. ✓ Refrigerator door should not open easily (prefer heavy, lockable models).
Bathroom
✓ Keep the door always open (quickly notice drowning). ✓ Move bath products (shampoo, toothpaste) to upper shelves. ✓ Keep water temperature at 38–40°C (thermostatic faucet is ideal). ✓ Use non-slip mats. ✓ Lock the toilet door or install a child safety lock. ✓ Store medicines and medical products in a locked cabinet.
Stairs & Doors
✓ Install safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs. ✓ Mark steps with non-slip tape. ✓ Install netting or barriers on railings (prevent head entrapment). ✓ Install finger-pinch guards or protectors on all interior doors. ✓ Make exterior doors have child safety locks. ✓ Mark glass doors with clear labels (prevent collision accidents).
Garden & Outdoor Area
✓ Keep the garden gate always locked. ✓ Learn to identify and remove toxic plants (poison hemlock, maple seeds). ✓ Store chemicals like fertilizer and pesticide in a locked place. ✓ Prevent access to pools, ponds, and water accumulation. ✓ Check the play area for sharp and unstable objects. ✓ Be aware of insects and bees in spring (activity increases with warmer weather).
How do I install a child safety lock correctly?
Install it on the inside of the door at a height your child cannot reach (typically above 150 cm). Screw the lock in tightly. Check its function regularly.
What should I do if my baby tries to touch electrical outlets?
Stay calm, gently pull their hand away, and say "no." Cover outlets with protective caps. If they try again, be consistent and patient. Learning takes time.
Do I need to buy all safety products at once?
No. Scan your home room by room and start with the highest-risk areas (stairs, kitchen, bathroom). Buy gradually based on your budget. Essential products: door locks, outlet covers, corner guards, and shelf anchors.
