Sweet Potato Puree — A Soft, Naturally Sweet First Recipe for 6+ Months
A gentle first puree of baked or steamed sweet potato mashed until smooth, shining with its own natural sweetness. Prepared from 6 months with no sweetener or additives of any kind; its creamy texture and mild flavor make it an easy-to-digest companion for the start of solids.
Ingredients
- 1 small Sweet potato (peeled and cut into small cubes)
- 2-3 tablespoons Breast milk, prepared formula or drinking water (to adjust consistency)
Directions
- 1
Wash your hands and the bowl and spoon you will use thoroughly. Scrub and rinse the sweet potato under running water, peel it and cut it into small cubes.
- 2
Place the cubes in a steamer basket or a pot with a little water; steam gently over low heat for 12-15 minutes until they are soft enough to mash easily with a fork. (You can also roast them at 200°C until soft.)
- 3
Drain the sweet potato; set aside some of the steaming water or a little breast milk/formula in a separate cup to adjust the consistency.
- 4
Transfer the softened sweet potato to a bowl and mash with a fork or blender until you have a smooth puree.
- 5
Add the reserved liquid a little at a time to reach a soft, flowing consistency that your baby can swallow easily.
- 6
Do not add any sweetener or seasoning of any kind; the sweet potato's own natural sweetness is enough.
- 7
Test the puree on the back of your hand to make sure it is lukewarm or at room temperature; always let your baby eat seated and under your supervision.
🌱 Why is it nourishing?
Sweet potato is a naturally sweet, easy-to-digest root vegetable rich in beta-carotene (a precursor of vitamin A) and fiber; with its soft texture it can give your baby gentle room to meet new flavors at the start of solids. Mashed until smooth, it offers a creamy consistency and may support getting used to spoon feeding. Because it is prepared with its own natural sweetness, no added sweetener is needed. With its light structure, it is a satisfying and well-loved choice among first vegetable purees.
