Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1

Wash your hands and all the bowls and utensils you will use. Make sure the chickpeas are soft enough to fall apart when pressed with a fork; if any are firm, simmer them a few minutes longer.

  2. 2

Drain the softened chickpeas; if the skins come off easily, slip them off with your fingers for a smoother texture and lower choking risk.

  3. 3

Put the chickpeas, tahini, olive oil and lemon juice into a bowl or blender.

  4. 4

Blend or mash well, adding the chickpea cooking water a little at a time, until you have a smooth, creamy, spreadable puree.

  5. 5

If you like, stir in a tiny pinch of cumin; taste and adjust the texture so it is soft enough for your child to eat easily.

  6. 6

Serve the hummus with soft bread strips, well-cooked soft vegetable sticks or cucumber sticks, offered in small pieces sized for your child's mouth.

  7. 7

Always have your child sit and eat under supervision; prepare easy-to-handle portions and store any leftover hummus in a covered container in the fridge.

🌱 Why is it nourishing?

Chickpeas are a legume rich in plant protein, fibre and iron, and from age two they can add natural variety to your child's snacks. Tahini brings calcium and healthy fats from sesame and makes the spread creamy, while olive oil gives it a soft texture. Blended until smooth, it becomes a satisfying snack that is easy to eat with a spoon or soft bread. Prepared with its own simple flavour, it needs no heavy spices or extra salt.

Maiyko's note

At Maiyko we care that snacks are simple, fresh and homemade. Prepare this hummus with little or no salt using fresh ingredients; because tahini contains sesame, if you are offering sesame for the first time, start with a small amount and watch for any reactions.
