Tummy Time: Gentle Support for Your Baby's Growing Neck Strength

If your baby fusses the first time you place them on their tummy, your heart may sink for a moment; that feeling is completely natural. Yet tummy time, tried at the right moment and in small doses, usually grows into a little world of discovery most babies come to enjoy. On a cool summer noon, a thin blanket spread on the floor of a shaded room can be a lovely place to begin.

Tummy time happens only while your baby is awake and you are right there beside them.

Why is tummy time so valuable?

The minutes your baby spends awake on their tummy let the neck, shoulder, back and arm muscles do their work. These tiny workouts can gently support skills like holding the head up, rolling and, in later months, crawling. Remember: sleep is always on the back; the tummy is only for awake, supervised play. Every baby is different — some are curious from day one, others need time to warm up.

Three steps for a gentle start

1

Start short and often

When your baby is rested and content — after a nappy change, for example — lay them on their tummy on a thin blanket over a firm, clean surface. One or two minutes is enough; on hot summer days a cool, shaded room makes the moment more comfortable.

2

Try starting on your chest

For babies not yet ready for the floor, recline slightly and lay your baby on your chest, face towards you. Your face and voice are the sweetest invitation to lift that little head — and yes, this counts as tummy time.

3

Catch their interest gently

Lie down too, bringing your face to their level; talk and sing. An unbreakable baby mirror or a soft high-contrast toy gives a lovely reason to look up. Placing toys slightly to the side can encourage turning the head both ways.

If your baby protests

Crying during tummy time, especially in early tries, is very common and does not have to signal a problem. Shorten the session, pick a moment when your baby is fed but not straight after a meal, or try the chest or lap version. A small towel rolled thinly under the chest opens up the view and makes things easier for some babies. When they show they are tired, finish gently; tomorrow is a new day. Small, regular moments matter more than long single attempts.

❓ When can we start tummy time?

Many families begin in the first weeks at home with short tries on the chest or lap. For timing and duration that suit your baby, you can ask your paediatrician; the schedule may differ for babies born early.

❓ My baby cries right away on their tummy — what can I do?

This is very normal. Reduce the time to 30-60 seconds, choose happy moments, and try the chest or lap variations. Rather than insisting, scatter tiny sessions through the day. Never leave your baby alone on their tummy and do not let them fall asleep in this position; if the distress continues, speak with your paediatrician.
