Tummy Time: A Gentle, Playful Guide for your baby
Around midday, when your baby is on the play mat trying to lift that little chin with wide-eyed surprise… In the first weeks, tummy time is a position many babies do not love. Started in your lap and in short bursts, it becomes a truly gentle support for neck, shoulder and back muscles.
Why does it matter?
Tummy time is a gentle developmental practice in which a baby learns to lift the head with control, focus the eyes and strengthen the shoulder and neck muscles. With every session your baby trusts those little arms a bit more; these small experiences pave the way for rolling, sitting and crawling later on.
A gentle step-by-step start
Start on your chest
Recline on your back and place the baby tummy-down on your chest, facing you. Your voice and breathing reassure them; this is the playful first step.
Low surface, soft texture
Choose a firm play mat or a folded blanket. Place something interesting in front: a high-contrast picture, a small mirror, or a favorite toy.
Short, frequent sessions
In the first days 1-3 minutes can be enough. Begin with 3-5 short rounds a day and adjust based on your baby's cues.
What if your baby doesn't enjoy it?
Crying, refusing to lift the head, or tiring quickly is normal. Shorten the session, stay on your chest, or lie next to the baby and keep eye contact. Soft music makes the moment lighter. Small attempts add up and prepare the next developmental steps.
The Maiyko difference: During tummy time, fabric is what touches the skin most. At Maiyko we use GOTS-certified organic cotton; a soft, breathable onesie supports your baby in moving freely.
❓ From what age should I start?
For a healthy baby, gentle lap-based sessions can begin in the first weeks. Floor sessions can grow gradually with your pediatrician's approval.
❓ Should I continue if they cry?
No; tummy time is not a task. Take a short break, pick the baby up, and try again in a few minutes.
