The Right Time to Start Solids: How to Tell Your Baby Is Ready

Starting solids is not a race but a calm introduction. While around the sixth month suits most babies, the most reliable signs appear not on the calendar but in your baby. Moving without hurry, following their cues, is the gentlest way.

Why around 6 months?

Experts note that in the first six months breast milk or formula alone meets most babies' needs. Towards six months the digestive system matures and the baby's need for certain nutrients, such as iron, grows; this is why solids fall around this time.

Even so, 'exactly six months' is not a strict rule. Some babies are ready a little earlier, some a little later. What matters is that readiness signs appear alongside age. Decide about starting earlier together with your pediatrician.

What are the readiness signs?

Being able to sit upright with or without support and to hold the head steady is an important sign. This makes swallowing safer.

A fading of the reflex that pushes a spoon back out with the tongue (the tongue-thrust reflex), clear interest in food and the table, and being able to bring objects to the mouth can also point to readiness. Seeing several of these signs together is more meaningful than one alone.

Small Steps for a Gentle Start

1. Choose a calm moment Try a quiet mealtime during the day, when your baby is hungry but not overtired or fussy.
2. Begin with one ingredient Start with a single smooth vegetable or fruit purée; staying with the same food for a few days makes it easier to become familiar.
3. Offer small amounts A few spoonfuls are enough. The aim is not to fill up but to introduce new tastes and textures.
4. Watch their cues Respect 'enough' signals such as turning the head away or closing the mouth; never force.
5. Keep breastfeeding Solids do not replace breast milk or formula; in this period milk remains the foundation of nutrition.

Frequently Asked

Can I start at four months?

Most guidance points to around the sixth month. If you are considering starting earlier, do so only in consultation with your pediatrician; every baby's development is different.

What if my baby refuses the first try?

This is very common. Getting used to a new taste takes time and repetition. You can calmly offer again over the following days, following their pace without insisting.
