Spring Sensory Play: 5 Ideas You Can Try at Home for Ages 0-5

The fresh energy of spring is a wonderful opportunity to explore with your child. Sensory play stimulates the touch, sight, hearing, and smell senses of children aged 0-5 in a fun way. Plus, you can prepare it with simple materials you already have at home.

5 Easy Sensory Play Ideas

1. Strawberry Sensory Bag: Put a handful of frozen strawberries and a little water in a ziplock bag. Let your child explore the soft texture by squishing the bag. This activity develops fine motor skills.

2. Plum Water Play: Fill a large container with water and drop in a few washed plums. From age 1 onward, kids strengthen their hand-eye coordination as they try to catch the plums.

3. Scented Dough: Add a drop of strawberry extract or lavender oil to homemade play dough. As your child kneads it, both their sense of smell and creativity develop.

4. Soft Brush Massage: Gently touch your child’s arms and legs with a clean makeup brush or a soft cloth. This gently stimulates the sense of touch and relaxes them.

5. Sound Bottles: Shake small bottles filled with rice, chickpeas, or pasta. The different sounds help develop the sense of hearing.

How long should sensory play last?

For ages 0-2, 5-10 minutes is enough. Children aged 3-5 can focus for 15-20 minutes. End the game when your child gets bored; don’t force it.

Which materials are safe?

Always use large pieces for babies and watch out for choking hazards. Choose organic materials. Supervise all play sessions with an adult.
