Sensory Play for 0-6 Months: Touch, Sound and Sight at Home
When your baby's tiny fingers close around a soft piece of fabric, or their eyes turn toward a sound, they are getting to know the world step by step. The first six months are a special time when touch, hearing and vision develop quickly. And you don't need expensive toys for this — a few simple things from around the house and short, joyful moments together are more than enough.
Why is sensory play so valuable?
Sensory play covers all the simple activities that give your baby room to explore by touching, listening and looking. At this age, the brain builds connections with every new piece of information arriving through the senses. Meeting different textures, sounds and images can support hand-eye coordination, attention span and the secure bond your baby builds with you. Every baby is different; you can adjust the pace by following their cues, and taking a break when they turn away or seem tired is part of the game too.
Three simple games to try at home
Touch: a basket of fabric squares
You can gather clean pieces of fabric with different textures — cotton, muslin, velvet — in a small basket. While your baby lies on their back, you can gently touch the fabrics one by one to their hands, arms and feet. Adding short phrases like “this one is so soft, this one is a little bumpy” connects tactile discovery with early language.
Sound: rustles and rattles
A wooden rattle, a small tightly closed container with rice inside, or even a piece of rustling fabric makes a fascinating sound source. You can first make the sound within your baby's field of vision, then move it slowly left and right; turning their head toward the sound is a sweet sign of auditory tracking. Keeping sounds soft and gentle matters at this age.
Sight: contrast cards and your face
In the first months, babies find high-contrast, simple patterns easiest to see. You can hold black-and-white cards about 20-30 cm from their face and move them slowly. And their favourite view is still you — making eye contact and smiling is a rich visual game all by itself.
Gentle discoveries in the summer shade
When the weather warms up, you can move sensory play into the shade. A few minutes on a blanket under a tree, early in the morning or in the cooler late afternoon, opens up a whole new world for your baby: light filtering through the leaves, a soft breeze on the skin, birdsong... In summer, fine muslin and light cotton keep your baby cool and are ideal for tactile games. With small precautions — avoiding direct sun, a light hat and frequent fluid breaks — these moments can be a real joy.
❓ When can I start sensory play?
You can start from birth. In the first weeks, skin-to-skin contact in your arms, talking in your soft voice and eye contact are already the most natural sensory games. As your baby grows, you can gradually add fabrics, sounds and cards.
The Maiyko difference: In tactile play, the quality of the fabric touching your baby's skin matters as much as the game itself. At Maiyko we use GOTS-certified organic cotton, because we believe sensitive baby skin deserves the softest, safest touch during its very first discoveries.
