Reading Together With Your Baby: Gentle Ways to Make Books a Conversation
If you have ever wondered “Is my baby too little to understand?” while reading, you are not alone. What makes reading special is less the words and more your warm voice and that quiet moment shared together. Let's look at gentle ways to “talk through” a book with your baby.
Why reading “together” makes a difference
For your baby, reading is not a one-way narration but a shared conversation. When you point to a picture and name it, your baby responds to your voice and your face. This small exchange gently nourishes the foundations of vocabulary and the secure bond between you. Not yet speaking does not mean not listening.
Follow your baby's pace
Notice which page they pause on and what they look at. Stay a little longer on a picture that draws them in; when they tire, move on without pushing.
Point and name
Point at the pictures with your finger and name them in short sentences: “This is a ball. Round and red.” Repetition helps learning.
Make room for sounds and expressions
Animal sounds, exaggerated faces and changes in tone keep their attention alive. Answer their coos with the same warmth; it is a conversation.
❓ My baby shows no interest in books, should I insist?
No. Attention spans are very short at this age and vary from day to day. Leaving the book somewhere visible and following the moments they show interest on their own is far more effective than pushing.
❓ They always want the same book, is that a problem?
On the contrary, repetition is a natural part of learning at this age. Reading the same book again and again gives your baby familiarity and confidence; they learn to anticipate the words.
The Maiyko difference: During shared reading all of your baby's senses are open, and every surface they touch is part of the experience. That is one reason we use GOTS-certified organic cotton at Maiyko: we care that everything touching delicate skin is soft and safe.
