Preparing and Storing Homemade Baby Purée Safely: A Practical, Gentle Guide
Preparing complementary food for your baby can be one of the loving moments you spend in the kitchen. But on busy days the question 'How long can I keep this purée?' may cross your mind. The good news: with a few simple habits you can prepare and store homemade purées in a way that is both safe and practical.
The Gentle Advantages of Making It at Home
When you make purée at home, you know what goes into it: you can offer the natural taste of a single food without adding salt, sugar or extras. Using fresh, seasonal vegetables and fruit can be both economical and a help as your baby meets different textures at their own pace. These little meals you prepare can also ease the rush of busy days.
Prepare it hygienically and fresh
Wash your hands, the counter and the bowl and spoon you use well. Clean vegetables and fruit thoroughly and work with fresh ingredients; if you cooked them, cool the purée quickly without letting it sit.
Divide into small portions
Split the purée into small portions to be used in one go. Clean ice-cube trays or small lidded containers are practical for this, so you only thaw as much as you need each time.
Label and store it correctly
Write the contents and date on the container. Store it on a back shelf in the fridge and in the coldest part of the freezer; do not refreeze a purée once it has thawed.
Safe Storage and Warming
As a general approach, using fresh purée kept in a clean lidded container in the fridge within 24 hours is a good habit. In the freezer, under suitable conditions, it can keep for a few weeks; for best freshness it is nice to use it within a month. Thaw frozen purée in the fridge the night before, warm it thoroughly before serving, then let it cool to a temperature that will not burn your baby's mouth. Do not use a purée whose smell, colour or texture has changed.
❓ Can I warm the purée in the microwave?
You can, but a microwave may not spread the heat evenly. After warming, stir it well and test with a spoon so there are no hot spots and it is pleasantly warm.
❓ Can I freeze every purée?
Most vegetable and fruit purées are suitable for freezing. The texture may change a little after thawing; you can stir it and add a little breast milk, formula or water to bring it close to its original consistency.
