Postpartum Pelvic Floor Health: A Gentle Guide to Rebuilding Strength
It is completely natural for your body to feel different after birth. Your pelvic floor muscles worked hard throughout pregnancy and delivery; now it is time to recover gently. Without rushing, at your own pace, you can accompany this process with small steps.
Why do the pelvic floor muscles matter?
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles at the base of your pelvis that quietly supports many everyday functions. Pregnancy and birth naturally put these muscles under strain. The good news: for most mothers this area can regain strength over time with gentle support. The goal here is not performance, but getting reacquainted with your own body.
Start with your breath
Sit or lie down comfortably. Breathe in slowly, and as you breathe out gently draw your tummy slightly inward. This is a gentle way to build awareness without straining the muscles.
Squeeze and release lightly
As if holding back from the toilet, gently engage the pelvic floor muscles for 2-3 seconds, then release fully. The release is just as important as the squeeze. Keep your tummy, hips and legs relaxed.
Add it to your day in small doses
A few one-minute sets a day are plenty. You can fit this little practice in while feeding your baby or resting. If it feels hard, take a break.
Be gentle with yourself
Some days you may have no energy, and that is entirely normal. Recovery is not a straight line; there are ups and downs. If you notice pain, a feeling of pressure or discomfort, stop and consult a health professional. Especially if you had a difficult birth, personal guidance from a specialist is the loveliest place to start.
❓ When can I start the exercises?
For many mothers it is suitable to begin after the first postpartum check-up; but every birth is different. Asking your doctor before you start helps you find the timing that fits you best.
❓ I do not feel any progress, should I worry?
Recovery can be slow and asks for patience. If a noticeable difficulty, leakage or discomfort continues even after weeks, a pelvic floor physiotherapist or your doctor can support you.
