Making Your Home Safe for Your Baby: A Gentle, Practical Guide
Only yesterday your baby stayed wherever you placed them; one day they begin to roll, then to crawl. In this exciting stage, the home becomes a vast field of discovery in their eyes. With a few practical adjustments you can keep that curiosity safe without limiting it.
Look at your home through your baby’s eyes
The most effective first step is to crouch down and look at the room from your baby’s height. From this angle, dangling cables, open sockets, small objects, sharp corners and furniture that could topple become far more obvious. Anything below about 90 cm from the floor should now be considered within reach.
Extra care during the warm summer months
In summer, windows and balcony doors stay open more often. Never leave your baby alone near a window, balcony or open door; use a safety lock or guard where possible. Gather curtain and blind cords out of reach, and keep hot surfaces and heated objects away.
Protect sockets and cables
Fit covers on unused sockets, gather cables along the wall or hide them in a cable channel. Dangling cables attract attention.
Soften corners, anchor furniture
Add corner cushions to coffee tables and desks; anchor bookcases, chests of drawers and the television to the wall. For a climbing baby, tipping is one of the most serious risks.
Put away small parts and cleaning products
Move small objects that pose a choking risk and all cleaning products into locked, high cupboards. You can fit child locks on low drawers.
❓ Do I have to do everything at once?
Not at all. Don’t rush babyproofing; start with the room where your baby spends the most time and spread it over a few weeks. As your baby gains new skills, reviewing the home again is the most natural approach.
The Maiyko difference: When the floor you set aside for discovery is covered with a soft play mat of GOTS-certified organic cotton, it cushions your baby’s tumbles while staying gentle on their skin.
