Language Development and First Sounds: Your Baby's First Steps Toward Talking

Your baby's first "coo" is one of those tiny sounds that melts your heart. These sweet murmurs are really the first rehearsals of language; long before talking, your baby is learning to communicate with you.

Talking is the simplest way to nourish development

How do sounds develop?

In the early months, alongside crying, your baby begins to make soft vowel sounds. Over time these turn into repeated babbles like "ba-ba" and "da-da". It is a lovely sign that the mouth muscles and hearing are maturing together. Every baby moves at their own pace; watch with joy, without comparing.

The seeds of words

Before talking, your baby listens to you, watches your lips and tries to imitate your intonation. Talking, singing and echoing the sounds they make each day helps those seeds sprout. Taking turns to 'speak', like a real conversation, also strengthens your bond.

1

Talk to them often

Narrate what you do during the day: "Now we're putting on your little socks." This lays the foundation of vocabulary.

2

Name as you point

Point to objects and name them. Saying "Look, a ball!" helps match words to the world.

3

Respond to their sounds

When your baby coos, pause, look at them and 'reply'. This back-and-forth teaches the first rule of conversation.

4

Look at books together

Colourful, simple books can be a calm evening routine for meeting new sounds and words.

❓ My baby isn't babbling yet, is that normal?

Developmental ranges are wide and every baby is different. Still, if you have any concern about development, sharing it with your child-health professional is the best step.

❓ Does a bilingual home delay development?

No. Babies exposed to more than one language can learn both over time; it is not a cause of delay.
