Keeping Your Baby Cool and Well Hydrated on Hot Days
When the thermometer climbs, it is natural to wonder how the heat is affecting your baby. The good news is that a few simple habits can keep your little one cool and comfortable.
Hydration changes with age
Babies under six months get all their fluids from breast milk or formula; extra water is not needed at this stage. On hot days your baby may want to feed more often, which is perfectly normal. After six months, small sips of water can be offered with meals alongside solids. Every baby's rhythm is different.
Creating a cool environment
Keeping the room shaded with curtains or blinds during midday protects from direct sun. Light, breathable cotton clothing absorbs sweat and soothes the skin. Never cover a pram completely with a blanket; it blocks airflow and heats the inside. Use a sunshade instead.
Frequent, short feeds
In the heat your baby may want shorter but more frequent feeds; this is the natural way to keep fluids balanced.
Thin layers
A single layer of thin cotton is often enough. Checking the back of the neck and the back tells you whether your baby is sweating.
Choosing cooler hours
Planning outings for the cool of early morning or evening helps you avoid the hottest midday hours.
❓ My baby is sweating, should I worry?
Mild sweating is the body's way of cooling down. But if you notice fussiness, very flushed skin, fewer wet nappies or lethargy, seek medical care without delay.
❓ Can I give water to a baby under six months?
It is generally not advised; extra water at this age can reduce feeding and is not appropriate. Fluid needs are met by breast milk or formula.
