Keeping Your Baby Cool and Hydrated on Hot Summer Days
As the weather warms in summer, many mothers wonder, “Is my baby getting enough fluids, and how can my little one stay cool in the heat?” That feeling is completely natural. Little ones are more sensitive to temperature changes than adults — but with a few gentle habits, you can keep your baby cool, comfortable and balanced.
Fluid Needs by Age
Every baby is different, but a general framework can help guide you. In the first six months, all of your baby's fluid needs are met by breast milk or formula; during this time extra water is usually unnecessary, even in hot weather. On hot days your little one may want to feed more frequently in shorter sessions — this is perfectly normal, and feeding as needed naturally supports fluid balance. After six months, small sips of water can be introduced alongside solid foods; follow your pediatrician's guidance on the amount.
A Cool, Comfortable Environment
One of the most effective ways to keep your baby cool is to adjust the environment. You can keep the room shaded with curtains or blinds during midday and block direct sunlight. If you use air conditioning, don't aim the air directly at the baby; a cool but draught-free space is more comfortable. Light, breathable clothing absorbs sweat and keeps the skin dry.
Choose thin layers
Dress your little one in a single, light, breathable layer. Check gently at the back of the neck: if it feels sweaty or too warm, remove a layer.
Feed often
In the heat, babies may want to feed at shorter intervals. Feeding on demand keeps fluid balance steady in the most natural way.
Recognising Signs of Overheating
Knowing your baby is your strongest guide. If you notice unusual fussiness, flushed and hot skin, rapid breathing, unusual drowsiness or a clear drop in wet nappies, move your little one to a cool space and support their fluid intake. If the signs persist or worry you, consult your pediatrician without delay.
❓ Can I give water to my baby under six months in the heat?
It is usually not necessary; at this stage fluid needs are met by breast milk or formula. If you think extra water is needed, it is safest to consult your pediatrician first.
❓ How can I keep my baby comfortable when the night is hot?
Ventilate the room and keep it cool and shaded, and choose thin, breathable pyjamas. Instead of a thick blanket, a light cover is usually enough.
