Is Your Baby Putting Books in Their Mouth? Nurturing a Love of Reading During the Mouthing Stage
When you hand your baby that lovely new book, the first thing they do may not be turning the pages but bringing the cover to their mouth. You may have wondered, “Am I doing something wrong?” Rest assured: this is simply how your baby gets to know the world, and it is a first, very precious bond with books.
Why does my baby put everything in their mouth?
Babies explore the world first with their mouths. Before the hands are fully coordinated, the lips and tongue are the most reliable way to understand an object's texture, warmth and edges. So chewing a book is not “causing damage” but a learning behaviour. What's more, even while mouthing a book your baby sees the colours, hears your voice and feels that books are an enjoyable part of life.
Choosing safe books during the mouthing stage
At this age, thin-paged books tear easily and small pieces of paper can pose a choking risk. Instead, choosing durable books that your baby can hold comfortably and that won't fall apart even when chewed will reassure you and make reading time enjoyable. Let the steps below be a gentle guide to the right choice.
Prefer thick board books
Board books with rounded corners and thick pages suit small hands and stand up to chewing. Choose models with no small, detachable parts.
Add cloth and bath books
Washable fabric books and water-resistant bath books are the most suitable options for mouthing. Prefer those whose labels show age suitability and washing information.
Clean and check them regularly
Wipe books with a soft damp cloth and wash the fabric ones. Gently set aside any book that tears, loosens or sheds small pieces; safety always comes first.
Gently keeping the shared reading moment alive
You can keep reading even while your baby chews the book. Point to the picture on the page and name it, soften your voice, use short and cheerful sentences. The aim is not to finish the book from cover to cover; it is for your warm voice, your lap and the book to become a pleasant moment remembered together. If your baby loses interest, don't force it — even a few minutes is valuable at this age.
❓ Is chewing books harmful to the gums?
For safe, age-appropriate books made of sturdy materials there is usually no harm; it can even be soothing during teething. Even so, check every book for paint, small parts or pieces that could come off, and if you have concerns, consult your doctor.
❓ When can I move on to thin-paged books?
Every baby is different. Generally, as mouthing decreases and page-turning skills develop, most children are ready for thin-paged books towards their second year. You can make the transition without rushing, following your baby's cues.
The Maiyko difference: Just as with everything your baby brings to their mouth, the fabric that touches their skin should be made of safe content. At Maiyko we use GOTS-certified organic cotton, because we believe every touch against delicate baby skin should be soft and trustworthy.
