Gently Easing Gas Discomfort in Babies: A Calm Guide
We know how your heart aches when your baby pulls their legs up and cries restlessly in the evening. Gas discomfort is a temporary and usually harmless condition many babies experience in the early months, and a few gentle touches can help comfort your little one.
Why does gas discomfort happen?
Because a baby's digestive system is still developing, air swallowed during feeding or an irregular bowel rhythm can lead to temporary gas build-up. This is often more noticeable between 0-4 months and eases as your baby grows. Every baby is different; what matters is recognising the situation and gently keeping them company.
Gentle methods you can try at home
The touches below are chosen by many mothers and may help soothe your baby. Apply them without forcing anything, watching your baby's responses; the calmer you are, the more they settle.
Hold upright after feeding
Rest your baby on your shoulder, supporting the head, and stroke the back with soft upward movements. This can help swallowed air come out.
Gentle bicycle motion
Lay your baby on their back, hold the ankles and slowly move the legs as if pedalling. Pause if there is any resistance.
Warm tummy massage
Warm your hands and draw small clockwise circles around the navel with light pressure. A few minutes may support bowel movement.
When should you consult a doctor?
If your baby cries intensely for a long time, has a fever, refuses to feed, or shows signs such as vomiting, diarrhoea or blood in the stool, contact your paediatrician without delay. Always consult your doctor before starting anything new for your baby.
❓ Should I try something on my own?
Starting things on your own is not recommended; only your paediatrician can decide what is suitable for your baby.
❓ Does the way I feed affect gas?
Feeding in a calm setting, with the head slightly higher than the body, and allowing time to burp in between can help reduce swallowed air.
