Gentle Ways to Protect Your Baby from Sun and Heat This Summer
Sunny summer days call us all outside — but with a little one in your arms, it is natural to wonder whether the heat will be too much for your baby. Rest assured: with a few simple precautions, you and your baby can enjoy the season safely.
Shade and Timing: Your Two Best Helpers
On a hot day, the most effective protection is often the simplest: the right time and good shade. Around midday the sun is at its strongest; choosing a cool corner at home instead of the park during those hours can be a relief for both of you. When you are outside, the stroller canopy, generous tree shade or a light, breathable cover work well. One small but important reminder: covering the stroller completely with a thick blanket can quickly raise the temperature inside; an airy, light-coloured thin cover or a proper mesh shade is the safer choice.
Make shade your priority
Before heading out, think of the shady stops along your route. Keep the canopy open and make sure no direct sun reaches your baby's face.
Dress light, loose and pale
Thin, long-sleeved, loose-fitting clothes protect the skin from the sun and reduce sweating. A wide-brimmed hat shades the face and neck.
Keep cool and hydrated
Frequent breastfeeding (or small sips of water after 6 months) supports hydration. Check the back of your baby's neck: if it feels sweaty and hot, remove a layer and move somewhere cooler.
❓ Can I use sunscreen on my baby?
Sunscreen is generally not recommended under 6 months; shade and clothing come first. For babies older than 6 months, baby-friendly products can be used — it is best to choose one together with your paediatrician.
❓ How do I know if my baby is too hot?
Being fussier than usual, flushed skin, a sweaty hot neck or fewer wet nappies can all be clues. Move to a cooler spot and remove a layer; if you remain concerned, contact your doctor.
